[Mẹo] Damping Factor là gì? Ý nghĩa của nó trong amply, cục đẩy?

Lately, Lạc Việt Audio has received numerous inquiries from customers regarding the selection of amplifiers and power amplifiers for their audio systems. Many customers have questions about the damping factor of amplifiers and power amplifiers. So, what exactly is the damping factor? How does it affect the quality of the amplifier? And how much damping is considered good? Let’s dive into this article to find out the answers!

Damping Factor là gì?

Damping is a parameter commonly found in products such as amplifiers and speakers. So, what is the concept of damping factor and how does it work? Firstly, let’s understand what damping means.

Damping là gì?

Derived from the English term, damping refers to the reduction of vibrations or shocks. This concept is mainly used in physics and certain electronic audio devices. Damping is not a specific measurement; it is a preliminary concept that helps us understand more in-depth concepts such as damping factor and damping ratio.

Damping Ratio là gì?

Damping Ratio, translated from English, means the reduction ratio (used for electronic audio devices). In fact, it is another term for damping factor. Some manufacturers do not use DF in their product specifications; instead, they use DR (damping ratio).

Since damping factor and damping ratio are very similar in nature, we will delve deeper into the concept of damping factor and its related knowledge. You can apply the same principles to damping ratio.

Khái niệm Damping factor là gì?

You might have heard that the higher the damping factor, the better and tighter the bass sounds from the speakers. So, what exactly is the damping factor? Damping factor can be understood as the damping coefficient or damping attenuation. It is a technical parameter found in amplifiers and power amplifiers but is often overlooked when selecting audio equipment.

Damping factor (DF) directly affects the oscillation on the speaker diaphragm, especially the subwoofer. When this value is greater, the bass sound becomes much tighter and clearer. Damping factor does not have a unit of measurement; it is simply a numerical value ranging from 50 to 200. In essence, damping factor in amplifiers and power amplifiers is the ability to control the subwoofer diaphragm.

Let’s use a concrete example for better understanding: When audio signals are delivered to the speaker, the bass diaphragm oscillates to produce sound for the listener. Without damping factor or when this value is too small, the speaker diaphragm oscillates uncontrollably, resulting in mixed sounds, noise, and an unpleasant listening experience. Conversely, with a sufficient damping factor, it is like having an accurate controller that knows when the bass diaphragm oscillates, how it oscillates, and when to stop, resulting in accurate and undistorted bass sounds.

Hoạt động của Damping Factor trong amplifiers như thế nào?

Explaining the working principle of the damping factor is challenging as it is a specialized parameter determined by engineers during manufacturing. However, you can understand the basic operation of the damping factor in karaoke amplifiers or power amplifiers as the reduction of the sound pressure level (SPL) generated by the movement of the bass diaphragm, intervening in the inertia of the diaphragm after the supplied signal stops.

This means that damping acts as a brake, timely stopping all unnecessary oscillations of the bass diaphragm, allowing it to oscillate as intended by the designer, thereby maintaining sound quality, cleanliness, and accuracy for the low-frequency section.

According to experts, when audio signals are delivered from the amplifier or power amplifier to the speaker, the speaker diaphragm will oscillate uncontrollably. Within the magnetic field of the magnet, an electro-motive force called back EMF – Electro Motive Force is induced, which operates similarly to an electrical generator. This voltage runs back to the source, which is the amplifier, and returns to the speaker. Since they have opposite polarities, they create resistance to the movement of the speaker diaphragm, causing distortion, unclear sound, and this is where the damping factor eliminates this voltage.

Cách tính Damping factor của power amplifiers và amplifiers

According to manufacturers, the damping factor value is calculated using the following formula:

DF = Z(L) / Z(A)

Where:

  • DF is the damping factor
  • Z(L) is the impedance of the speaker
  • Z(A) is the output impedance of the amplifier or power amplifier

Thus, when the impedance changes, the damping factor also changes. When the speaker impedance is higher, the damping factor increases, resulting in less impact on the speaker diaphragm. For example, if the speaker impedance is 4Ohms, the diaphragm operates strongly, while with an impedance of 8Ohms or 16Ohms, the diaphragm will oscillate less.

For the output impedance of the power amplifier or amplifier, if this value is low, the damping factor will be higher, resulting in better bass sound. For example, if the output impedance of a power amplifier is 0.01Ohms and the speaker impedance is 4Ohms, then DF = 400, which is quite high, ensuring good and accurate bass sound. If you use a speaker with a higher impedance, such as 8 Ohms or connect two 4Ohm speakers in series, the damping factor will be higher.

Ý nghĩa của damping factor là gì?

Damping factor is a significant parameter that greatly influences the sound quality of speakers, especially subwoofers. Selecting audio devices with a good damping factor brings the following benefits:

  • The bass sound becomes tight, neat, and free from noise or distortion.
  • Controlling the oscillation of the bass diaphragm helps prolong the speaker’s lifespan and maintain its original sound quality.
  • The entire sound system becomes more professional with higher accuracy, providing the best listening and user experience.

Chỉ số damping factor trong amplifiers và power amplifiers bao nhiêu là tốt?

From understanding the concept of damping and how the damping factor works, we can conclude that a higher DF provides better control over the speaker diaphragm’s oscillation, leading to better audio quality.

However, in practice, not all power amplifiers and amplifiers with a high damping factor are good. It also depends on the manufacturer’s specifications. For example, McIntosh amplifiers have a DF range of 80-100, yet they produce powerful and high-quality bass sounds. On the other hand, some current class D amplifiers have extremely high DF values, up to 1000, but their bass sounds are rough and rigid. As for speakers nowadays, most of them have small bass drivers and low sensitivity, so having a high damping factor helps to produce better bass sound and reduce unwanted noise.

In general, to have a high-quality power amplifier, amplifier, or karaoke speakers and professional audio systems, we follow the principle of selecting amplifiers for 8 Ohm speakers with the lowest damping factor of 400. Of course, the higher the damping factor, the better.

Ngoài damping factor, còn chỉ số nào tác động tới chất lượng power amplifiers?

Although damping factor is an important parameter that greatly influences the output sound quality, when purchasing audio equipment, you should also pay attention to other relevant factors such as:

  • Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the sound
  • Speaker wire gauge (which affects the control of the bass by the speaker diaphragm)
  • Frequency response range of the product

Một số sự thật thú vị về khái niệm damping factor là gì?

  • Damping factor is understood as the damping coefficient or damping attenuation, but it is rarely translated directly into Vietnamese due to the inability to express the true nature of this parameter.
  • Damping is a concept used in speakers with two meanings: mechanical and electrical. On the electrical side, it is calculated similarly to the previously mentioned DF, while on the mechanical side, it is determined based on the speaker’s structure and the air loaded into the diaphragm. However, this value is difficult to determine, so it is less emphasized.
  • Most consumers who purchase power amplifiers or amplifiers for their audio systems often overlook the damping factor and focus only on specifications such as power, impedance, weight, or brand of the product.
  • After reading this article, remember to pay attention to the damping factor when choosing audio equipment, especially when selecting an amplifier for a subwoofer.

In conclusion, in this article, we have explained the concept of damping and damping factor as well as related knowledge about DF and damping ratio. We hope that the information shared by Lạc Việt Audio will help you understand this parameter better and choose the most suitable and highest-quality audio equipment.
